Tear Science provides the most significant advancement of the past few decades toward the treatment of patients with evaporative dry eye . Tear Science treatment has the potential to dramatically improve the quality of ones life.
LipiView

LipidView
The LipiView Ocular Surface Interferometer
The LipiView Interferometer measures the absolute thickness of the tear film lipid layer by analyzing more than one billion data points of the interferometric image of the tear film.
The patient’s tear film can be seen as an array of colors. As Doctors we are now be able to see the interference pattern from the tear film and have a visual reference to view specular observations of the tear film.

In addition to viewing, capturing, manipulating and storing digital images of specular observations of the tear film, a patient’s blinking pattern can be evaluated.

How it works

The LipiView Interferometer operates on the principle of broad-spectrum white light interferometry, and provides a interferometric color assessment of the tear film by specular reflection. Your eyeis positioned in front of an illumination source that’s directed toward the tear film on the corneal surface. Light from this source passes through the tear film and is specularly reflected into a camera. The light reflecting back through the lens in the camera forms an interference pattern, called an interferogram. The advanced computer system then captures and records 32 frames per second, in real time.

The Meibomian Gland Evaluator (MGE)

The MGE allows the us as eye doctors to evaluate meibomian gland secretions.

How it works
The Meibomian Gland Evaluator (MGE) is a handheld instrument used by a physician to evaluate meibomian gland secretions during routine eye examination. The instrument provides a standardized method to apply consistent, gentle pressure, between 0.8 g/mm2 and 1.2 g/mm2, to the outer skin of the lower eyelid. The presence of liquid from a meibomian gland orifice (visualized through a slit lamp biomicroscope), during expression with the MGE, indicates the meibomian gland is not obstructed.

The Meibobian glands to the right are healthy. We have between 25-40 when young distributed between the upper and lower eye lids. During the evaluation exam for dry eye,, theses glands are assessed and determined as to whether they can be saved by under going LipdFlow treatment.

A Breakthrough in Treating Evaporative Dry Eye

LipiFlow® is a new procedure designed to treat the root cause of Evaporative Dry Eye, blocked Meibomian glands. Opening and clearing these blocked glands can allow them to resume natural production of lipids (oils) needed for a healthy tear film.

The LipiFlow Thermal Pulsation System enables us as doctors to treat obstructed Meibomian glands.

These glands inside the eyelid secrete lipid (oil) that produce the lipid layer of the tear film. Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) causes the lipid layer to be compromised in dry eye conditions. Without an adequate lipid layer, the rate of evaporation of the tear film from the eye is excessive, resulting in a dry eye state. The most common cause of meibomian gland dysfunction is obstruction and blockage of the ducts and orifices of these glands. By restoring or improving the lipid layer, the rate of evaporation is decreased and relief from the dry eye state can be achieved.

LiipFlow Treatment
How it works

At the heart of the LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System is the Activator (eyepiece). The Activator uses patented, precisely controlled heat applied to the inner eyelid with adaptive pressure encouraging your body to resume the natural production of lipids (oils) needed for your tear film. Its single-use design and built-in sensors ensure a safe, sterile treatment. The treatment is performed while at the Dry Eye Clinic — and in some cases, on the same day as your evaluation.

The LipiFlow Activator is a sterile, single-use biocompatible component that consists of a combined lid warmer and eyecup. The lid warmer generates heat directed onto both the upper and lower inner eyelid surfaces. Behind the eyecup, an inflatable bladder pulses against the outer eyelids. The disposable fits under the eyelid, simultaneously delivering heat and pressure to both the upper and lower lids. Treatment time is only 12 minutes per eye and is performed in-office under continuous monitoring.

In a clinical study, 79% patients reported improvement of their overall dry eye symptoms within four weeks, ranging from 10% to 100% improvement.9,10
Some treatments attempt to add more liquid to your tears, but without the complex natural oil, tears continue to evaporate faster than produced.
Imagine returning to doing the things you enjoy, without worrying about your eyes. LipiFlow® could be your first step to relief.
